Thomas Brown Architects Inc. is a full-service architectural practice specializing in Civic, Institutional, and Healthcare design and offering specific expertise in planning and programming, restoration, sustainability, interior design, and project visualization. The Firm is a founding member of the Toronto Chapter of the Canadian Green Building Council. To date, we have been involved with over 100 Fire Stations projects, many with highly specialized programmatic requirements, limited budgets or difficult sites for which we have produced thoughtful and creative solutions.
We have aided over 20 municipalities in site selection, site planning and building programming for Emergency Services being accommodated in a single facility, or in multiple facilities being integrated onto one site. We have undertaken Building Life and Usage Suitability Assessments for existing facilities. We have designed prototypes for Markham Fire, Halton Region EMS, Peel Region EMS, Guelph Fire, Mississauga Fire and Toronto Fire for future fire, ambulance and hybrid facilities and have customized those designs to fit individual sites as the client acquires suitable properties.
Since 2001, we have been offering Programming and Pre-Design Services to smaller Municipalities in Ontario who are looking to upgrade or expand their Emergency Services facilities but who lack the resources and expertise. Having forged good relations with our clients, we continue to assist several Municipalities and their Fire and Emergency Services Departments on an on-going basis.
We understand Emergency Services facilities are not typical buildings due to their complex mix of use, occupancies and degree of hazardous material they contain. They require specialist equipment and specialist provisions, and must be structurally, mechanically and electrically engineered to operate as post-disaster facilities. They must be able to accommodate rapid changes in the provision of emergency services as they impact male, female and physically–challenged personnel, advances in communications, vehicles, services, equipment maintenance, storage of hazardous material, requirements for decontamination, fire training, and fire prevention.
